Veneto, an industrious region, brilliant but silent. So as not to grasp, outside, the cornerstones on which the social fabric is based, such as the link to the territory, to work, to the family, to individual enterprise and to the obstinate spoken in dialect, considered by many a true language . If we add the millennial history of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, finished by Napoleon, the annexation to the nascent Italian State and the imposition of a new and grammatically different idiom, here is explained, only in part, the fervent Venetian independence movement. All these ingredients, sometimes interpreted individually, have laid the foundations for a galaxy of small parties, associations and small groups all with the horizon of independence but in reality very disunited and unable to present themselves to electoral moments under the unique flag of San Marco which, paradoxically, is waved by everyone. It is estimated that the number of independent activists in the territory are on the order of 50 thousand (and the number is growing), of which a third, often silently for not being accused of betrayal by the most extremist fringes, votes Lega Nord. Just the League is not well seen by most radical separatists, accused of having betrayed the cause, removing for example the word Nord from the symbol or to have denied the assault of the group of the Serenissimi in Piazza San Marco in '97 or worse, to have brought the question of Veneto only on economic bases, neglecting its historical and cultural values, the referendum on the autonomy of last October, which saw a broad participation and a plebiscite almost unanimous in favor of the yes, has perfectly inserted into the scenario of the right of self-determination, which reached its peak with the elections of last October in Catalonia and which is contributing to the growth of these movements. And after the referendum, traveling in the Veneto region, in the cities and in the silent and productive plain, in the small villages, between the gray of the sky and the apparently diffident hints of the inhabitants, numerous flags of San Marco appear, proudly exhibited by houses and warehouses . An independence that has radically changed its appearance, open to the world but delimited in a small and well defined area, made up of thousands of different souls, including scholars, historians, producers of badgets, musicians, lawyers, workers and entrepreneurs. Transversal but, for now, still looking for points of union and a charismatic leader who will take him to the new millennium.
